When water gets into a hospital, every minute counts. This morning our team was called to an emergency water damage job at Nepean Hospital in Kingswood, Penrith, and we were on site within 60 minutes of the client's call.
Here is how we handled the job, step by step, following the IICRC S500 Standard for Professional Water Damage Restoration.
On Site Within 60 Minutes of the Call
Water spreads quickly across carpet tiles, under partitions and into wall linings. The sooner extraction starts, the less moisture travels, the shorter the drying time and the lower the risk of secondary damage such as mould, which can start to grow within 24 to 48 hours.
That is why our emergency water damage restoration service is built around fast response times for commercial and domestic clients across Western Sydney.
Our IICRC S500 Water Damage Restoration Process
The IICRC S500 is the industry standard for professional water damage restoration. It sets out how water damage should be assessed, extracted, dried and verified. Our technicians are IICRC certified, and every water damage job we do follows these steps.
Step 1: Water Extraction
The first priority is removing standing and absorbed water. We used a commercial extraction unit with a weighted extraction tool to draw water out of the carpet tiles and the backing underneath. Extraction removes far more water than evaporation can, so thorough extraction early shortens the whole drying job.
Step 2: Moisture Mapping
Water rarely stays where you can see it. Using moisture meters, we mapped the affected area to confirm exactly which flooring, walls and materials were wet and how far the water had travelled. This moisture map becomes the drying plan and the baseline we measure progress against. It uses the same approach as our mould and moisture inspections.
Step 3: Dehumidifiers and Air Movers
With the wet areas confirmed, we set up dehumidifiers and air movers. Air movers push air across wet surfaces to speed up evaporation, and dehumidifiers remove that moisture from the air so it does not soak back into the building. Equipment was placed according to the moisture map so drying is targeted where it is needed.
Step 4: Monitoring Until Dry
Drying is not finished just because a surface feels dry. We continue to take moisture readings and adjust equipment until the affected materials reach their drying goals, so hidden moisture is not left behind in walls or flooring.
Why Fast Drying Matters in Healthcare Facilities
Hospitals and healthcare sites carry extra risk when water damage occurs. A fast, standards-based response helps with:
Patient and staff safety by reducing slip hazards and keeping wet areas under control.
Infection control and indoor air quality, because damp building materials can support mould and bacterial growth.
Less disruption to clinical and administrative areas, so the facility can keep running.
Protecting the building, including flooring, plasterboard, furniture and equipment.
If water damage is not dried properly, it can lead to mould that needs professional mould remediation. Learn more about the risks of toxic black mould.
