This Cronulla home had water getting in from two places at once: a slow-leaking water pipe behind a wall, and a cracked roof tile letting rain in. Together they kept the wall wet long enough for mould to grow inside it, and the affected materials had to be stripped out.

Two Leaks, One Wet Wall

A slow pipe leak rarely looks like a flood. It wets the framing and the back of the plasterboard a little at a time, often for months, before anything shows on the painted side. A cracked roof tile adds more water every time it rains. When both feed the same area, the materials never get the chance to dry out, and mould grows inside the cavity.

Why a Strip-Out Was Needed

Under the IICRC S520 standard for mould remediation, porous building materials with mould growth, such as plasterboard and insulation, generally can't be cleaned and are removed. Stripping them out also exposes the timber framing so it can be properly cleaned and dried.

What We Found

Once the wall linings came off, mould growth was visible on the timber inside the wall cavity. Mould-affected timber that couldn't be saved was removed, and our technician worked on the exposed framing in full PPE: respirator, hooded coveralls and gloves.

What We Did

  • Stripped out the mould-affected wall materials

  • Set up fans and dehumidifiers to dry the framing and structure

  • Reinstated the wall with new plaster and paint once it was dry

Fix the Water First

Mould removal only lasts if every water source is fixed. On a job like this that means two repairs: a plumber for the leaking pipe and a roofer for the cracked tile. If only one is fixed, the wall gets wet again and the mould comes back.

Signs of a Hidden Leak in Your Home

  • A musty smell in one room or cupboard

  • Bubbling or flaking paint, or swollen skirting boards

  • Stains on ceilings or walls that get worse after rain

  • A water bill that's higher than usual

What an Inspection Costs

Our mould inspection and quote are free. If you need a professional moisture and mould report, for example for an insurance claim, reports start from $500 + GST. We service Cronulla and the Sutherland Shire as part of our Sutherland Shire mould removal and water damage services.
